Suits for men: Always look your best
It's time to suit up! There's a reason why cinematic icons like James Bond are usually seen in a classic suit. Stylish and sophisticated, they can make any man look good. Whether you need a suit for everyday office wear, or you're getting dressed up for a special occasion, there are a few things to know. These days, two-pieces are more common, but for very formal events, you can find a three-piece, which will include a matching waistcoat. Suits are available in just about every colour out there. The most versatile will always be black, though. If you're buying one for the first time, stick with that; however, as you get more comfortable with this style of smart dressing, you can branch out.
Different styles of suits: What you need to know
For a modern take on the men's suit, try a slim fit. This form-fitting style is actually more forgiving than it sounds. It won't cling to your body, but instead, skim over it, and is a great way to highlight broad shoulders. Slim fit suits are best for the office, but not for formal events, which are more about timeless classic style than fashion. Stick with the classic fit for them. Some designers also offer what is known as a modern fit; this is halfway between the classic and slim styles and is a good choice if you want a youthful style. Traditionally, your suit will either have one, two, or three buttons. Choose the one that you prefer, but remember the golden rule: If your suit has at least two buttons, always leave the bottom one open.
How to look sharp in a suit
First, ensure that your suit fits you properly. A suit can be a real investment piece, so don't be afraid to have it tailored if necessary. It should sit well on your shoulders, with the cuffs hitting your hand just above the wrist, and the hem of the trousers falling to the correct spot. Make sure your accessories match. In particular, take a look at your shoes. Unless you're confident about your abilities as a stylist, stick to black shoes with a black suit; ideally, check that your belt matches, too. Your suit jacket is one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. Wear it with jeans for a cool weekend look.
